House News What's Up Homecoming Pictures '98 Doc Covey officially resigned as advisor. Doc, we appreciate everything you've done for us! |
All I can say is, if you missed it - you missed one of the greatest Smokers of all time. Everything started on Friday night with a Pig roast at the house. Hedrick Bonham, founding father class '49, was on hand. Hedrick had a ton of stories to tell and felt right at home with the younger brothers. He said he had been getting the newsletters and decided to see what we were up to. Charles Vance '65, also showed up with a future Sig Tau, his 11 year old son. Saturday morning we started things off early. After leaving the house at 1:30 am Saturday, I arrived back at 8:30 am to find James Murphy, walking over dead souls. You've never seen people jump as fast as when I hit the door. Anyway, we had a lot to do to get ready for 9:00 am. Russell Lochart, Mark Robertson, were the next to arrive and then Doc Covey. By 9:15 we had a house full. Other names like Ken Ragle '78, Mark Willis '83, Mike Barbery '83, David Cox '92, Rodney Cox '90., were just a few on hand to enjoy the morning. Even some of our little sisters from the 80’s helped make the morning special like: Billie Wiant, Lisa Craft, Donna Nester, Kim Wright, Amy Hanel to name a few who brightened the smoker. All in all, it was a great day. Doc Covey had made his mysterious Weed Soup and we learned a
little more about what is inside that pot. We told Doc we would keep that a secret for ever (we don’t want to scare off any future pledges). All in all ,we had a really great morning. The deck was a big hit as it allowed us to have someplace besides the front yard to gather. The brothers and Pledges, headed by Roy Green, did all the work themselves. It did make for a better meeting place and did show everyone that we mean business about the alumni association. Anyway, we moved the smoker to the ball field as the game against Liberty was about to start. By some bit of luck and a little Sig Tau influence we were able to park right beside the gate opening which gave us incredible exposure to the stadium. This year, kegs of beer
were not allowed at the game, so we took our gas grill and cooked hotdogs by the gate. By game time we ran into brothers that could not make it to the house and some that never got any information that we were still alive. They were in for a big surprise. Anyway, at the game we met up with Ron Wade, George
Dishner and Rick Krout and a few others who have now become involved with our cause. Well homecoming 1998 is over and I’m sure everyone is tired of me nagging the heck out of them to attend. I will not say anymore about Homecoming 1998, cause Homecoming 1999 is scheduled for Oct 23, 1999 and don’t think I’m gonna let anyone forget it, so you’d better be there. Many of us are staying at Pipestem. They fill up fast so you need to book now. The number is 1-800-CALL-WVA.
You cannot believe the last three months. The brothers have built a 36 x 30
foot deck, which is the largest part of the house. Roy Green, Chapter
President headed the whole project along with his studies and his new
baby. If you were at homecoming you saw how nice the deck turned out.
Carl Smith(Active) has been in charge of restoration of the main bathroom,
which was finished by homecoming. We had new carpet installed
throughout the entire house in July, which really help the musty smell,
installed a new 70 gallon water heater, replaced the sewer pump. It has
been a very expensive year and we still have plenty of work to do. Some of
the windows need to be replaced, the back bathroom needs work done and
we need a new heating device. A wood stove and baseboards heat the
house. I hate using the baseboards cause it runs the electric bill sky high.
The executive board will soon be taking over control of the house and will
be making decisions on any maintance that needs to be done. I say we tear it down and rebuild. Check out this Chapter Housing Guide for more information. House Wish List: Yard supplies - Bush Hog, rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc...
Household items - bed linens, towels, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies...Furniture - Can someone donate a sofabed? Right now we have no place for alumni to sleep. We need beds and dressers as well. Saturday October 17th, we officially formed a board to help with the direction and future of the Fraternity and the Alumni association. I think the mix of brothers from varied business relationships, age and geographical location gives me a tremendous amount of confidence that this new board can and will help move this fraternity into the next millennium. The following list of Brothers have volunteered to donate their time in making sure the brotherhood of Sigma Tau Gamma succeeds: Tom Bay '81, Princeton, WV - President - Clinic IV. Mike Barbery '83, Manassas, VA - Special Agent dept of Treasury. Dave Carrico '81, Princeton, WV - Assistant Manager American General. Kevin Craft '84, Roanoke, VA - Acting Director for Blue Ridge Regional Health Care Coalition. Ken Ragle '78, Hurricane, WV - Sales, Roche Pharmaceuticals. Mark Willis '83, Richfield, OH - Attorney, Willis & Linen. I would like to fill three more spots. One with someone from the school year 1950-1970. One with a background in Tax Accounting and one more with legal background in corporations. I hope you will feel comfortable with the people chosen to lead this organization.
May 7, 1949...May 29, 1999 marks our 50th anniversary on campus. On May 7, 1949 the colony know as Phi Sigma Phi
was Chartered as Alpha Lambda the 35th chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma. I am trying to locate our
founding Fathers and see if we can get them back to Homecoming next year. This will be a great way to
hear stories of how and why we started. It will help us capture a little of our heritage and maybe bond this
organization a little closer. If you are on this list or if your not on this list and you were a Founding Father
and you received this newsletter, please call me so we can make arrangements to get you home in October.
I think with a little help we can pull this off.

We need all Alumni support. 1999 is the year that I want our lounge back.
Please call Rick Dillion who is the in charge of residential housing and let him know you are concerned about this. I feel if enough alumni call, we have a good shot at having our letters back on campus. We lost the lounge on the 7th floor about six years ago and since then we’ve had no place to hang our letters. Please do your part by calling Rick at the school. 1(888)384-5249.
I (Eric Hillman '83) had a baby girl on Sept 22: Casey Elise.
We still have about 30 XXL Tee-shirts from Homecoming. Send a check for $15.00 made out to Sigma Tau Gamma Alumni. Proceeds go to helping this organization grow.
Mike Stennett '83 has moved to Lynchburg, VA where he works for
Piccadilly's cafeteria as an associate manager.
Did you know Sigma Tau Gamma is the oldest Fraternity on Campus?
I hear that John Sydnor '84 has the hottest place to eat in Cambridge, Maryland. Just pull the boat right up to the place. His restaurant is called Snapper's Waterfront Cafe and is at 112 Commerce Street. If you're in Cambridge stop by and say hello.
Jim Murphy '93 will graduate from the WV State Police Academy in June and has said that if any brother needs anything to let him know (I don’t think he knows what he is saying with that comment). We wish Jim safety as we know it’s not very safe out there.
Remember to tell other brothers we have this website up. Please send mail via the the website or to erichillman@europasports.com. Contact numbers for me are 1-800-447-4795 at work and I have a toll free number for my cell phone at 1-877-904-7773.
Looks like we are planning a summer party at the house in late May. Will tell you more about it in the next Gentleman. So until then Happy Anniversary Alpha Lambda. |
